CULTURE & HISTORY
THE BEST OF BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK

Persimmon Gap Visitor Center
Location: At the north entrance to the park on Hwy 385, 42 miles south of Marathon and 26 miles north of park headquarters.
Features: A broad selection of books on Big Bend geology, history, animal & plantlife, maps & guides, and much, much more. There is also a museum room and a mini theater.

Panther Junction, Park Headquarters
Location: At the main crossroads, at the center of the park.
Features: Like Persimmon Gap, this complex houses a broad selection of books on the park, deserts plants & wildlife, geology, etc., along with excellent museum displays (including a giant relief map of the park). There is also a self-guided cactus garden around the grounds.

Historic Hot Springs Area
Location: Approx. 18 miles southeast of Panther Junction (on the road to Rio Grande Village), turn right at the sign and follow the dirt road for approx. 2 miles to the river.
Features: Historic buildings and ruins, including: the general store / post office, the lodging quarters, and the hot spring pool. Along the 1/2 mile trail to the hot spring are cliffs that are inscribed with pictographs. Be sure to bring along a bathing suit or swimwear to take advantage of the 102 degree waters of the hot spring (the walls are long gone, but the pool is intact and still in use today by visitors to the park).

The Foreman's House at the Homer Wilson Ranch
Location: Approx. 8 miles from the start of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, at the designated overlook.
Features: Beautiful scenery along the lower Blue Creek Trail makes a grand location for a ranch house. You gotta feel that Homer Wilson's foreman must have loved his home. The building is in very good condition, and is open to entry. Look for corrals and other ranch structures around the house, as well.

Castolon Village
Location: Along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive near the Rio Grande River, just past the majestic, multi-hued Cerro Castellan peak.
Features: Walk-through ruins below the rustic ranger station and old adobe buildings that house a simple supply store, restrooms and residences. Truly spectacular backdrops. A beautiful, very typical southwestern setting. Be sure to bring your camera.
