Promise the Present

I wish I had a way to see the future
To confirm the things I feel inside
If only I had a window into tomorrow
Where all the answers lie

For making promises against a future
Where revelations remain concealed
Is just our way of holding to the present
Against a past now signed and sealed

The future holds no absolutes, no guaranties
But that it will never be now, never today
Yet we cling to it like a beam of light
Lest we miss the path and lose our way

Yet promises may only be held faithful
Against our knowledge of what has passed
And only time will tell what the future holds
Only time will tell what will come to pass
